Dead Space has all the tropes you'd expect from a survival horror game though... Resource management, manual save points, puzzles, backtracking etc. It's much easier to compare it to Resident Evil than Doom... Especially modern doom which is nothing like Dead Space other than sci fi and combat.

On normal it's pretty lax with the resource stuff, at least for me on PC using mouse+keyboard. On hard it was much more noticeable where I'd be conserving ammo and using stasis to avoid some fights if I was low on health. It's survival horror imo and it works well, it creates tension.

but Dead Space is full of survival horror aspects. Obviously the horror part but also the resource management, manual save locations, backtracking etc

I mean in Resident Evil games you're rewarded for killing things as well, clear a corridor of zombies and the corridor is now easier to traverse when backtracking.

DS is definitely survival horror. Albeit more action focused than other games in the genre.

yeah the mind fills in the blanks, I think it's why people really enjoy PSX/lo-fi horror. The first Silent Hill is much more creepy to me than the second because my mind is left to make the details on top of the low res image.
