A long time ago, things were getting pretty serious between me and my SO. I was planning on proposing, and after a quiet homemade lunch and setting up for a movie night, I steeled myself to pop the question.

A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, โ€œMy car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?โ€

Good people need to start outing their ICE family members, neighbors, and community members.

They need to be made into pariahs in the places decent Americans gather.

The only way you genuinely believe Kirk never harmed anyone is if you're cis, white, and think human rights are an academic exercise.

Charlie Kirk advocated for and promoted political violence every day of his life, and his work is a large part of why we are where we are.

Do not weep for Nazis.

Some in Congress canโ€™t muster maturity when they have a transgender colleague. But members of the U.S. Armed Forces canโ€”and have.

My NDAA amendments repeal Trumpโ€™s cruel trans military ban & restore retirement benefits to trans veterans forced out of service.

Iโ€™m 41. In my life, every single professed value of the right has turned out to be a bad faith lie they said to amass power: small government? ICE raids & book bans. Free market? Kleptocracy & mercantilist tariffs. Free speech? Arresting protesters and firing professors. It was always a lie.

When I was in the Army, we had a term for a soldier whom everyone else despised.

We called them "That Guy."

That Guy could be any rank: private, sergeant, lieutenant, colonel.

โ€œprobably makes for indifference, and it is quite possible that the prevailing ignorance is due not merely to unfamiliarity with the facts but also a kind of resistance against what is supposed to serve as a pastime and mostly tends to be disagreeable. A pattern most often to be observed, perhaps, among women, namely, skipping the political sections of newspapers, where information is available, and turning immediately to gossip columns, crime stories, the womanโ€™s page, and so forth, may be an extreme expression of something more general.โ€

In 1950, Adorno argues that the authoritarian personality is in part a result of the US treating the news as entertainment.

He says here politics looks boring in comparison to sport, which encourages apathy. Implied is the fact that "entertaining" news is part of authoritarian projects.

A digital illustration of Robert Smalls. His bust portrait is in the center. He is a black man with a beard, depicted in his younger days, wearing a dark coat over a white shirt and bow tie. Below him is a depiction of The Planter, the confederate steam ship he stole and sailed to Union lines to free himself and several other enslaved people with him. Under the ship is a banner with the words โ€˜Make Your Own Freedomโ€™. Around all this is gold filigree framing lettering reading โ€˜Robert Smallsโ€™. The drawing is all monochrome on a mottled blue with gold and white highlights.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. Itโ€™s not intellectually superior. Itโ€™s the virus theyโ€™re trying to infect us with. NO
