I get that limits have to be drawn somewhere. But what I don't understand is: why there? Your every roadside is lined in billboards, your commercials are endless, your capitalist ethos constantly drums the importance of spending money, including on unhealthy things. Why is THIS the line in the sand?

The "bad for society" angle, however, has a clear counterpoint - it's going to happen anyway, so it may as well be made safer.

It therefore reads a bit histrionic to see American outrage and fearmongering about the encroachment of sports betting into mainstream society. But then, that's probably how other country's concerns about American gun culture read going the other way, eh? Honestly quite eye-opening to witness.

Betting shop on every corner in this country, you don't think about it. Ray Winston pops up to give live odds at half time in the football, it's annoying more than anything. Ads, odds, exposure, everywhere. You don't even notice it unless it's especially irritating (like that bloody Mr Vegas ad).

Kinda interesting reading all the US takes on the scourge/dangers of sports betting given how it's been such a normalised part of my country's culture for so long. It's like the gun control debate in reverse, genuinely illuminating.
