Absolutely, Martin. That was discussed at length among councillors, and formed part of the motion. We need to have some faith in our young people. We've taken a lot from them! Time to give back

My speech to council earlier this week.
Thanks John. I talk a bit more in my 'right of reply' at the 3h mark if you want to hear a bit more. The whole debate was really interesting

23.07.2025 12:46 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Outdoor play isnโt just about children. Itโs about neighbourhoods that are safer, healthier, and more sociable for everyone.
Letโs give kids back a little of what we once had. And in doing so, we just might improve life for all of us.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. ๐
Hereโs the video of my speech and the wider debate from last nightโs Full Council. I hope it shows the value of listening to one another โ and acting for future generations.

Iโm grateful to Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors for their friendly and constructive amendments, which improved the motion. Cross-party working at its best.
There was also a debate about priorities โ and a brief detour to Hoylake Beach โ but we stayed focused on the real issue: our kids.
What we agreed:
โ
Develop proposals to support outdoor play
โ
Explore Play Streets & signage reviews
โ
Co-design with children, families, and residents
โ
Align with national play strategy
โ
Report back within 6 months
Itโs not everything โ but itโs a strong start.
I was also inspired by the fantastic work being done by @playingout.bsky.social around the UK

The Raising the Nation report lays it out clearly:
๐ง More anxious children
๐๏ธ Less access to nature
โ๏ธ Growing inequality
๐ Declining health and independence
It calls for local action โ and thatโs exactly what weโve started here in Wirral.

A broken sign that says 'NO BALL GAMES. Terraced houses and trees behind
Many of us remember knocking for our mates, playing out until it got dark, kicking a ball against a wall or building wobbly go-karts.
For many children today, that freedom is gone. Roads are busy. Screens are everywhere. Outdoor play has been squeezed out of everyday life.
Two kids move along a quiet street in the sun. One on a scoot, one cycling
On Monday night at Wirral Council, we unanimously passed my @wirralgreenparty.bsky.social motion to support more welcoming, child-friendly neighbourhoods and a proper strategy to promote outdoor play. ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐โโ๏ธ

23.07.2025 10:30 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0For an awful lot of politicians and pundits, the story about fixing our railways starts and stops with one word: NATIONALISATION. But this slogan alone is doomed to fail us all.

Heidi Alexander's decision to remove the safeguarding of HS2's route from Birmingham to Leeds is short-sighted in the extreme. This is the most beneficial part of the whole HS2 scheme - as we said at the time that the construction of the leg was cancelled. www.placeyorkshire.co.uk/govt-axes-de...
