I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, it’s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. It’s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine they’re in The Parallax View.

I used to think it was like a funny joke in The Sims that in their fictional world you improve your "Charisma" score by going up to a mirror and practicing Hitler gestures but people apparently are trying to apply this technique IRL.

I predict this will be visible in 100% of objective measures of consumer behaviour and in 0% of anything poll/survey-based.

Tea Party organizers wrote guides distributed through Google Groups on how exactly to interrupt town halls and get irate. It only took a few people acting inappropriately to get the crowd moving. They moved clips quickly to outlets. These people were coached and encouraged and eventually funded!

I bought it on vinyl when it came out but I didn't really think much of it beyond "Side 2 of this is in my 'stuff I can fall asleep to' pile". It's taken me a while to internalize how distinctive Kranky's stuff in general and SoTL/Labradford in particular really are in that ambient space.

When that Aix Em Klemm album came out I was like "This is a neat little diversion" but it's gradually become a classic to me.
