I am a big fan of critical mass theory in social movement studies. There is a tipping point where activists are outnumbered by usually passive people who become protesters, which lessens thd perceived risk, and thereby widens the movement further. A good thing.

"Annex" is a very good word for this.

I've used this, and it's good. What Walsall now needs is a protected cycle lane on Mill Lane between the Arboretum and the McClean Way. That would mean a mostly carfree route from Birmingham to Chasewater Park and, ultimately, Lichfield.

Mass deportations of legal immigrants are now the standard policy of the Tories. Very grim. And "mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people" to me sounds more like a racist megaphone than a racist dog whistle.

Gotta say, I love the intergenerational nature of these No Kings protests. For too long, we have let ourselves be divided by age. We need solidarity and exchange of ideas across generations.

At the very least, protests like the one today show that people are not alone, that opinion is not uniform (despite legacy media's failure to reflect that), that people have agency and can make a difference, and that history is not ordained but actively made. That's quite a lot of hope, really. 💪
