The battle in Fairfax, then, is about far more than one apartment complex. It’s about whether California’s housing laws mean anything at all. If a town like Fairfax, after voluntarily submitting and receiving state certification for a housing plan, can simply reverse course when the time comes to follow through, then the entire system collapses. Yes, I was in SF before Marin, and the attitude towards public school by the private school parents was really disturbing. Marin has some excellent schools and is much better shape that way. However, the shrinking school age population is making it very difficult to pass needed bonds.

That surprises me - I thought teacher pay here was pretty good (although that might be mostly Southern Marin where I am - Novato probably doesn't pay as much).

Outside of the cost of living, the Bay Area is one of the nicest places to live in the world. An aging popluation is a choice.

I strongly disagree that we have to "grapple with the fact that this is the future." There's an easy solution - build housing. We have an ongoing shortage of care workers. Restaurants close at 8:00 mostly because they can't find workers. We have the highest cost of living in the state because we have to pay so much for folks to commute.

Marin is the "leader" of this pack, with an average age of 48. The impact on a town is much worse than struggling bars. Finding employees is a huge problem when most of your population is over 60. We've struggled to recruit teachers and health care aids for years. Now we struggle to hire doctors.

My theory is that old people are cranky.

This 100% affordable housing project in Marin is being attacked for being "ugly". It's hard to understand how this will degrade the neighborhood aesthetics.

This was even uglier than it sounds. The superintendent, union, teachers, parents and students all supported continuing the consultants. Three trustees picked this contract for $250k, out of the $184M budget for scrutiny. They lied and misled about the data and called the superintendent a liar.

Affordable units are priced for those at 80% of the area median income (AMI). Many school teachers in Marin are over 80% AMI. Many working couples wil easily afford either the affordable or market-rate units. storage.googleapis.com/proudcity/sa...

This thread encapsulates why I'm such a nut about housing. An affordable cost of housing enables an affordable cost of living which enables people to do cool, arcane stuff they love which makes life fundamentally more interesting.

The article suggests that women freely volunteer, and if women were savvier about saying "no", they'd do better. More typically, we are "voluntold" for unwanted jobs. It can be very tricky to escape these "opportunities" without being labelled a non-team player or worse.

This will be a huge win for the community. This provides 41 affordable units and another 200 that will be affordable to median income folks, such as school teachers. That's a huge win for working families. What infrastructure will this break? It's right downtown, the schools need more kids.

This is a test of Newsom's HCD. If he wants to show the country that he can get things built, HCD will intervene here.

The developer of the Oak Hill project in Marin did a CEQA review "to be safe". It was not required, but they knew there would be public backlash without it. That delayed the project about 18 months. Costs have escalated and now they they are struggling to get finacing. The delay is a big problem.

The original project was submitted in 2018, so the rules were pretty different then? I think they got enough grief that they resubmitted to something that was more bullet-proof. One of the planning commissioners' firms submitted the SF sloat project, and the NIMBYs are being educated via the HE.
