It's a historical thing. Daniel Fahrenheit in the 18th century set "0 degrees" to be the lowest temperature he could actually create in his lab, using a mix of river ice + water + salt. He was trying to calibrate mercury thermometers more accurately than before. Very old-fashioned now, tho :))

Ball in a water bowl on a deck.

Every day I put clean water in all my outside water bowls. Every night the raccoons come by, drink & wash their paws, and also put this ball in this particular water bowl (never any of the others) after playing with it.

63 degrees F is about thirty degrees above freezing.

I'm in the southeastern US, so it's about 20 degrees warmer than normal. For the next week or so. I'm guessing it will get cold again after that.
