You are a gift, Ed Yong! You introduced me to bird watching a year ago and it’s been a constant source of delight and awe amid my long covid struggles. Thank you for your advocacy and allyship. Seeing this piece today brought me joy!

A tumultuous 24-ish hours since our preprint was released yesterday. I mentioned that this was a fraught issue and I genuinely do understand that people have mixed feelings about the work. I wanted to take some time to respond to some of the concerns and comments that have 1/

Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.

I am also in it and I still can’t grasp the weight of it. Still in the stunned phase of things, I suppose.

Thank you for this! I’m in LA and can’t get a purifier shipped for the life of me. Ordered one and it’s stuck in Chino. Was on the phone with Air Doctor today for 45 min and in the end they disconnected my call. Air purifiers are the new toilet paper.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) that says the air is safe in LA after the wildfires does not take into account toxic gases that form when urban materials burn at such high temps. Considers ozone, PM, NOx, SO2. My team and I are discussing going there to measure the toxins in the air (between SD & LA).

Methinks the EPA might stay mum because they don’t want to get sued. But yes… someone please help us! My pulmonologist told me yesterday that this is akin to a post 9/11 toxic situation then you have a whole city of people relying on Purple Air readings even when ash is falling from the sky.

As someone in LA right now who has Long Covid, thank you so much. I’m hoping there’s an option for expedited shipping. The smoke is ridiculous and my current unit is not keeping up.

ISO - Professional who can interpret existing CPET and iCPET results in relation to mitochondrial functioning vs overall conditioning.

Can interpret lactate recovery time, average mixed venous oxygen @ rest & exertion, anaerobic threshold independent of VO2 max. Asking for a friend who will pay.

Nature Scientific Reports
Effects of a symptom-titrated exercise program on fatigue and quality of life in people with post-COVID condition – a randomized controlled trial — Barz et al.
"While exercise in our study has reduced the subjective fatigability during activities of daily living as evidenced by the reduction in FSS scores, it did not improve the [objective fatigability] in tasks requiring consecutive maximum exertion of effort such as the repeated HGS test. Our findings also allude to deconditioning not being the cause for objective fatigability in PCC."

The form of PEM that occurs in #MEcfs is (as far as we known unique to ME and even diagnostic of it. If someone has that, they have ME. But lots of things get mistakes for PEM that are not ME-PEM.

Brief thread 🧵 on my thought after 22 years of this.

Just to bust this myth: PEM is *not* just disproportionate fatigue. This is a huge misconception. PEM/PENE is a systemic, whole body response to over exertion, that involves inflammation, muscle damage, neuroinflammation, immune activation and metabolic dysfunction. It’s never just fatigue #MEcfs
