So PLEASE, could we just move on! And invest in the infrastructure we actually need to hasten our transition off fossil fuels, leave this deadly industry behind, and create hundreds of thousands of new green jobs that are insulated from Trump and the U.S.

There is something terribly wrong when the top of mind policy goal is building new oil and gas pipelines, as Canada burns. If we want major projects let’s decarboize the grid and retrofit every building. @mark-carney.bsky.social

As we debate the future of the NDP and labour political action, I thought my still recent book The Fire and the Ashes: Rekindling Democratic Socialism may be newly relevant. Available from BTL books.

Last night NDP voters saved Canada from the surging hard right, but had to sacrifice our own party in the process.

Today the battle begins for a system where we don't have to do that any more.

We badly need a party that can save Canada from the oligarchs who brought us all to the brink.

In the 1958 Diefenbaker sweep, the CCF won 8 seats and 9.5% of the vote. Better than the NDP yesterday. We should seriously reflect on building a new political movement, as they tried to do via the New Party which became the NDP?

Duverger’s Law holds that first past the post, single member electoral systems tend to produce two party systems. Tomorrow’s federal election looks set to mark a return to the norm. #cdnpoli

Tom Gunton provides an excellent critique of proposals to build new oil pipelines in Canada. In todays Globe ROB. The idea sounds good but the economics don’t work.

Opinion: Does Danielle Smith know we can all see and hear her? The Alberta Premier’s spectacle of naked self-interest has been broadcast for all to see. Does she think everyone’s too stupid to notice?

New from me. The way Danielle Smith behaves about tariffs raises an important and disturbing question: does she know we can all see and hear her? #cdnpoli www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/opi...

Jim Stanford: Here’s why we will survive Trump’s tariffs β€” the answer is right in front of us Export industries are critical, writes Jim Stanford, but almost 80 per cent of what we produce is by Canadians, for Canadians and never crosses a border.

At a time when Canada needs MASSIVE investment to transition away from the US, to build new facilities and transpo towards our ports, to rebuild our military, to build HOMES, to rebuild science and post-sec ed... to see the two main parties jump on *tax cuts* for their campaigns is depressing.

Credit for responding to the 2008 global financial crisis should go to Jack Layton who forced Harper and Flaherty to support a major change in fiscal policy. #cdnpoli #cdnecon

There is no shortage of good ideas for disentangling Canada from the U.S. and investing in more resilient alternatives. What all of these ideas have in common is a foundational belief in and commitment to the public interest.
