yeah, 14 feels quite railroaded like that. 11 is very different and it truly does depend on what one wants from it but it's a game that asks you to take in the world at a slow pace and let it absorb you (all the while having five wiki pages open, mind you, but still)

they've made a ton of QoL changes over the last 25 years but it's still functionally a very frictional game that asks a lot of the player to engage with it on its own terms but if you manage to click with it it's very absorbing and immersive.

this was my experience with a realm reborn back when I played it. its why i didn't feel like playing it much. with FF11 you can play most of it with trusts and also I have been playing with friends who are also running any given dungeon for the first time so it feels much more coherent.
