I have just received a copy of Boy in Darkness, which I didn't even know existed. I am still putting off reading it because that will mean I never get to read it for the first time ever again. Daft, I know.

I love Shephard's illustrations, but Rackham's manage to pip them for me.

I am absolutely with you. Peake is one of the best writers this country ever produced. The chapter where Gertrude and her cats go to see Dr Prune and she expresses her unease about the castle is...well, words fail me. No other writer could get away with it, let alone make it moving and dark.

And the one that IS actively giving his wealth away and funding huge vaccine programmes is villified by the very people who would benefit because they think he is the Establishment and that he wants to control them.

It is incredible. Always very cynical and politically aware. I did not mean to come across as sarcastic, by the way.

The first Lovecraft story I encountered was The Rats in the Walls. I got a cassette ta0e from the local library, narrated by David McCallum. Brilliant.

Iit arrived today. I have never been so...happy?...excited? There isn't a word to express the idea that there is a Titus Groan story, no matter how short, that I was unaware of and that I shall soon read. I am deliberately putting off starting it.

This NEVER gets the recognition or praise it deserves. Truly unique, wonderful writing and full of the strangest, most glorious characters.

So, my book was delivered today and I ran downstairs full of breathless excitement. Which disappeared to be replaced by a degree of confusion, for instead of Boy in Darkness by Mervyn Peake I received The Fall of Saigon.
