when i first read A Legacy of Spies i kept imagining how wonderful it would be to have Michael Jayston reprise the role of Peter Guillam in an adaptation; while i am of course very excited to watch this, i'm sad to see he is now unavailable for the role

Saved by Stoppard
Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec I), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy",
", and rapidly
we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival.
Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia.

Ding dong, coal is dead At least in California.

The last coal plant delivering electricity to California has closed.
California's energy system is now coal free.

The thing that really boils my potatoes about Al in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist.

But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this Al generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the Al Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building.

I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.

Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between β€œshoestring budget” and β€œno expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art

A digital painting of a landscape, the sky dominant, with waves of heavy clouds and a just a tiny bit of blue sky peeking through at the top. The light is late afternoon. There is the silhouette of rolling hills in warm autumn brown at the bottom, with a tiny patch glowing amber in a distant sunbeam. Leafless ash trees reach up through the right side, and two crows fly near the left. Brush strokes are easily visible and the style is painterly. The artist watermark reads Copyright 2025 Jennifer Miller "Nambroth" featherdust dot com.

"Cloudy Day Out My Window," Digital painting

The days are growing short, and the clouds bring night sooner than I expect, while the crows play in the blustering winds. Painted from life, looking out the window next to my computer.
