but like, from a writing pov, this is more or less data, but *less* surface-level alien (maybe voyager's doctor is a better comparison). i don't think you could make it work differently without modern context, or without the character being entirely one-note (bad writing - annoying to viewers!) 2/

i am pretty comfortable viewing the age of stars as a "good" ending - possibly even explicitly progressive, since it's very much about rejection of the tyranny of divine rule, without plunging into despair, and trusting in the *potential* of mortals to build a better world

afaict FromSoft soulslikes basically all share the same politics of despair. Things were better in the past, they will never be that good again, we can either limp along trying to be The Past But Worse, or we can burn it all down with no vision for how it will improve. This is bleakly reactionary.

it's still, obviously, an ARPG, and totally fair if it's not your cup of tea, but it winds up feeling more like ff7 than you'd expect (very different from e.g., ff15/16)

i actually thought it was a strangely thoughtful blend of action RPG with the original ATB system - you wind up pressing a lot of buttons, and can move around on the field, but combat revolves around managing your ATB gauge in a way that feels more turn based than it looks (imo)
