Percent self-employed on the vertical axis, log of per capita income on the horizontal axis. There is clearly a negative relationship.

This is reminiscent of previous findings of a negative relationship between Self-Employment and GDP per capita:

This paper takes a broad view: motivations, incentives, attitudes to promotion & authority, culture, reinventing one's identity as entrepreneur, characteristics of the knowledge base, problem-solving approaches, management practices, ... and even a bit of game theory!
