Is it corny of me to listen to Stacy’s Mom? It’s such a jam but feels a bit on the nose. 😅

Of course there’s also been moments of stress and self-doubt. I’d be remiss to pretend otherwise. However, it pales in comparison to the excitement I have for the job, the pride and respect I have for my clients, and my passion for the work. It feels good. Here’s to sophomore year!

Today marks one year at my firm! In the past year, I’ve litigated in the Ohio Supreme Court, worked on statewide ballot measures, watched our clients win elections, defended voting rights and ballot access, and learned so, so much from the best in the business.

Was worried I was terrible and everyone hates me and then I remembered no, that’s not true, I’m just tired and forgot to eat lunch.

At the end of the day, we are all walking, talking houseplants. If you’re wilting, get some water, food, and sunshine and you’ll be just fine. 😅

But part of me still wonders how much of the nihilism I see in Columbus can be traced back to this summer and our collective failure to follow through on those promises. We made progress, but there’s still so much still to do. Five years. Crazy.

That night, and many others after, forced me to consider what happens when law and justice fail to reach the same conclusion, and what my obligations are to my community as a lawyer and an individual. I attribute so much of my growth for being forced to confront these questions.

Five years ago today, I was tear-gassed on the steps of the Statehouse while volunteering as a legal observer at a protest for George Floyd. It escalated faster than anyone could’ve imagined, as lifetimes’ worth of anger and grief met force. I still lack the words to describe it.

Ferguson’s order to study data centers comes as the state faces a budget deficit of at least $10 billion. Ferguson has said he will look for ways to cut spending before raising new taxes. The corporate tax breaks Washington awarded to data center companies in 2023 surpassed all of the state’s aerospace subsidies, including Boeing’s, The Times and ProPublica reported last year. Because of these incentives, data center companies have saved more than $474 million in taxes from 2018 through 2023. More than 65% of those savings have gone to Microsoft, which reported net earnings of $72.4 billion in 2023, the news organizations found. Microsoft told the news organizations last summer that it employed 417 people in its Washington data centers. Washington lawmakers first successfully introduced tax breaks for data centers in 2010, arguing that they would keep companies from leaving the state and create a wave of high-paying tech jobs in rural areas.

Wow. What an obscene system - Washington using taxpayer's cash to subsidise data centres, which in turn cause those taxpayer's electricity bills to go up.

All so Microsoft can force-feed chatbot slop to its customers and charge them extra for the privilege.
