Using AI is bad scholarship; passing it off as your own work is academic misconduct.

It's stories like these that make me extremely frustrated at academics who seem to have given up, and are actively encouraging their graduate students to use genAI in their research (e.g. coding). Surely withholding customers and use-data from these companies is one of the ways we can fight back?

It's truly such an admission, that they can't bother to pay attention to speed limits.

Cannot emphasize enough that, if you dislike doing the things academics do (reading, writing, developing and expressing opinions about things you've read) enough to try to make a chatbot do them for you, there are lots of actual humans who would be happy to take that unpleasant job off your hands

In three months Wellington County speed cameras brought in $1.5M Since the program’s implementation in January, five cameras sent out 84,000 tickets collecting over $4 million in revenue, with about a third going to the county.

I think this article from the Record might have been close to front page, and probably is where folks got the idea? www.therecord.com/news/waterlo...

Agree, the Region should promote the good use of this money. The confusion might come from Wellington County which I think pays a third of fees to 3rd party? I could also see that functionally the rent for the cameras comes out of the revenue, maybe not in the actual budget but in spirit

If a human told you things that were correct 80% of the time but claimed, flat out, with absolute confidence, that they were correct 100% of the time, you would dislike them & never trust a word they say. All I'm really suggesting is for people to treat chatbots with that same distrust & antagonism.

If a colleague had the reliability rate of an LLM, they would be fired. If ordinary* software did, it would be uninstalled.

LLMs require the chat format, because chat makes us party to the conversation. We insert the meaning ourselves - and hold it to a different standard. It's the mirror effect.

Study looking at AI chatbots in 7,000 workplaces finds 'no significant impact on earnings or recorded hours in any occupation' Despite AI’s promise to revolutionize white-collar work, most workers are using it sparinglyβ€”or hiding it from their boss.

AI doesn’t help you work less or get paid more, but does destroy the environment and climate.

More to say on burnout and I'm probably going to boost it a few times because folks need to hear it:

Burnout is a form of brain damage. It happens when stress conditions persist until they damage our brains.

It's an injury that needs to heal, not a weakness that needs to be pushed through.

I knew it wasn’t for me when a colleague said β€œwow I can’t imagine taking a weekend off” during career week and there were nods around the room.

Idk if they were just posturing, but the fact that such sentiments are encouraged and normalized gave me the ick.

I would love to see more research teams employ data managers. While roles like data scientists and research analysts are crucial for analyzing data, those roles often don't have the time to develop standardized and documented processes that lead to better data. #databs

Luisa's most recent argument is that we should cave to these drivers: that if they are inconvenienced, they'll act dangerously, and that's the Region's fault! We can't let policies be determined by who will be most mad when they have to follow the rules like the rest of us

VERY valuable thread for geoscientists, and all scientists who are looking for the right questions to ask their professional societies. Even after they walked back some of the advance compliance, it was still extremely troubling to see AGU damage the trust they'd built with their diverse membership.

It's the eighth anniversary of the shooting attack inside the Great Mosque in Quebec City.

We will never forget Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzedine Soufiane and Aboubaker Thabti.

Here's a video of the commemoration, held on Saturday.

My occasional reminder to folks on tenure and promotion committees that there will be a cohort of people whose early careers were defined entirely by the pandemic and *waves vaguely* this nonsense, and it *will* impact their productivity.

It can't not.

When I set out to create the Daily News podcast, my personal goal was to see if I could write, produce, edit and release something that was better than CBC's morning business report.

And it's increadible how easy that was to do with literally no resources.

We said it above and we'll say it here too: you can reduce the footprint of your call by 96% by going audio-only. Inventing the whiny, entitled Millennial How avocado toast became a weapon of generational warfare that stripped Millennials of the autonomy and capacity to resist.

Here's my new piece. It's a deep dive into why Millennials have been infantilized and why teenagerness has been extended into young adulthood: it's a tool of social control to render entire generations incapable of organizing to fight back.

Reminder that one of the most important times to wear a mask is right now during holiday season travel. Transits hubs are high risk as many people travel while they are sick. A high quality mask like an N95 will help protect you and help ensure you don't miss out on valuable time with loved ones.
