what is fascinating to me is the number of people whose “knowledge” of government appears to just be an accumulation of cliches and stereotypes + an inchoate sense that if something is big and costly then it must necessarily be “wasteful”

When three gorgeous Eastern bluebirds join you for breakfast, that’s a good look. I’ll be having eggs and toast, and they are enjoying safflower and sunflower “meats”, but all are welcome. Bluebirds are not common on feeders in the mid-Atlantic so I’ll enjoy the company when I can.

Under pressure from some conservative activists, Sununu pulls state librarian nominee
Critics took issue with the nominee’s past work helping colleagues respond to book challenges.
The bold position taken by this candidate for State Librarian in New Hampshire? People should be able to read what they want to read. That's it. That's all. It's all so outrageous.

Prisoner’s Self-Portraits of C.I.A. Torture Surface From Sealed Court Record
“This is what his nightmares are all about,” said a lawyer for a now-confessed war criminal who spent years at Guantánamo Bay.
Twelve years ago a federal appeals court ruled that the CIA could memory-hole a photo of a prisoner whom the CIA had tortured because the photo might reveal something about how the CIA had tortured him. Remembered that when I read this @carolrosenbergnyt.bsky.social story.

I've seen a lot of wishful thinking since Trump won -- a kind of desperate hope that surely a person who won the electoral college and popular vote isn't THAT bad, that the team around him isn't THAT crazy, then they just keep being themselves. a tiny brown dachshund puppy with tan a snoot and eyebrows, and adorably wrinkly ankles sits on a black countertop. next to him is a chalk sign that reads, "My first visit at Vets 4 Paws in Irvine." the sign indicates the wide-eyed puppy's name is Otis, he is 2.2 kilograms, and he's 10 weeks old.
This is Otis. He just had his very first vet appointment. Even got to take a picture like it was his first day of school. 12/10 we're proud of you, Otis

Bonus 110: The President's Prorogation Power
The President's (never-exercised) power to involuntarily adjourn Congress might be a lot narrower than it looks—especially if this Supreme Court is ever asked to interpret it.
Today's bonus issue of "One First" looks at the President's never-before-used power to "adjourn" Congress—and why even this #SCOTUS would be unlikely to allow President Trump to use it to force an involuntary Senate recess that would trigger recess appointments:
