I don't think it's a good thing for society that everything is now gambling

Why is it OK for Anthropic to train their models on a huge corpus of copyrighted data, but it is not OK for paid users of Anthropic's services to use that data to train their own models in turn?

That didn’t really answer my question. Which corporations (or industry lobbies) are we beholden to? In what ways? Who is the machine? Why should I trust you?

I’m curious in what ways you see Ann Arbor as β€œbeholden to corporate interests” in ways City Council could influence to create better outcomes.

People talk about this stuff in terms of how much it'll suck for gaming and I hate to inform you how many MRI machines, X-Rays, all sorts of other vital machinery are just a Windows IoT Edition PC in a beige plastic box with a big magnet/accelerator/whatever attached.

What are we even doing here? I am very sympathetic to the idea that LLMs are excellent at "translating" ideas from one linguistic context to another. Inter-language translation, plain-text English specs to rigorous computer language are examples they work well.

And "summarizing" emails from coworkers is very alarming to me, especially if they're writing emails with LLMs. One person uses a lossy amplifier to expand their thoughts into an email, the other person uses a lossy filter to compress them back

TBH I think the Iran escalation is the brass trying to distract him from the idea of invading Greenland, recognizing however bad engagement in Iran would be, risking an actual war with Europe would be far worse. (And there are many more off ramps from Iran given its relative geopolitical isolation).

Seems like the policy didn't achieve its stated goal.

Look, if people want to remove these monsters, people need to focus on actually removing them. There is no other path forward.

And to be frank, a lot of people assume this is a problem people in power are working on when in fact no one is.

Should semen analysis become the Pap smear for men? Some men’s health experts say yes

With data like this, Turek, along with a growing number of other men’s health experts have a bold idea: have men routinely undergo a semen analysis, for the sake of fertility and general prevention of disease. β€œI am trying to propose to the world that we need guy-necologists,” he said, β€œand that … the semen analysis is the new Pap smear for men.”

Hackers Expose Age-Verification Software Powering Surveillance Web Three hacktivists tried to find a workaround to Discord’s age-verification software. Instead, they found its frontend exposed to the open internet.

Oops. Turns out Persona, Discord’s age-verification service, was secretly screening selfies against government watchlists AND accessible by the feds. It's backed by Peter Thiel.

Here's what far too many people don't understand: even if "the cost of developing software is going to zero", well ... code isn't an asset, it's a liability. If you're building something for more than one-time-use then it's a lot of work to keep it running, secure, etc.

The top graph implies that the average OECD country saw road deaths rise during the last decade. Nope.

At the bottom, the OECD removed US data to show that other countries actually made progress.

As an American, this is embarrassing.

This is correct, unfortunately. So, what it amounts to is that the Republican Party imposed $175 billion in illegal taxes on American voters, & we have absolutely no recourse to getting that stolen money back. Pure lawless authoritarian theft.
