Japanese fandom, to me at least, seems mostly based on aesthetics too and very modern history, 1980s-onwards based almost entirely in pop culture.

I'd figure euro fans would be thinking about the hundreds of years of history, or they'd just be dr who/harry potter fans.

I just don't think it hits the same, and i've not seen anywhere near the level... The euro examples feel much more like an individual interest/hobby for some people, whereas japan fandom is like a whole culture within itself, with various communities and by comparison much greater numbers.
