And one more recommendation for good measure: "A New Deal for the Tropics" by Manuel R. Rodríguez. It's an academic book, but readable and filled with historical nuggets that you'll be shocked you didn't already know.

Another good book: "Fantasy Island" by Ed Morales, which really goes deep into how Puerto Rico ended up bankrupt a decade ago and, shortly thereafter, left to languish in the second-longest blackout in world history.

This is a good moment to note that Daniel Immerwahr's "How to Hide an Empire" is fast read and does a good job of contextualizing the last 128 years of U.S. rule over Puerto Rico.

I am only on chapter 1, but envisioning documentaries as intoxicating as the ones we see on streaming platforms today covering other early empires and cities.

The continents magnificent history is in the thousands.

While much of that history was eradicated from colonial ideologies, it is imperative we relearn the intricate history of North America and recognize the ingenuity of Indigenous peoples here.

Reading about the ancient cities of North America in “Native Nations” by @kathleenduval.bsky.social creates powerful images of elaborate, complex, and sophisticated urban spaces.

North American history is as seductive to our imagination and knowledge as Romans, Inca, Greeks, Babylonians… and so on

I'm old enough to remember when Poilievre's camp said an unknown staffer put all those misogynistic tags in his social media content.
