Until 1974, it was legal to refuse to sell a house to a woman. Until 1988, it was legal for landlords to refuse to rent a unit to a woman with children. Your granny didn't stay married because her generation had a stronger moral compass than people today. She stayed because society LITERALLY stole away all her independence. Think about that the next time someone wants to go back to "the good old days". It was only good for men ..... and only for men of a certain demographic, if you catch my meaning. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
