Easily feeds 2 people, it's luxurious if you get a decent avocado, and it's cheap!

I would like to add an entry here I like to call "bodega dinner": make box mac & cheese as directed (Kraft or Annie's, or whatever).
Slice an avocado, add it to your mac & cheese.
Get a can of those La Morena pickled jalapeรฑos. Put a ton of those on top.
Eat, and enjoy the $$ you saved!

Iโ€™m imaging something like the Citibike Bike Angels program, like give 4 free MTA rides for every intersection cleared of snow, free subway ride for every storm drains cleared, etc.

Or whatever the right incentive might be!

I bet folks would do this.

Question for urban planner/policy people: are there any examples of cities quasi-formally marshaling volunteer efforts for things like clearing snow from curb cuts, clearing storm drains in downpours, etc.?

There is a finely choreographed ballet of industrial machinery and infrastructure that, against all apparent odds, keeps this city from descending into chaos

โ€œContrary to widespread fears, there is no evidence that drivers seeking to avoid the toll have slowed journeys in places like Staten Island or the Bronx.โ€

โ€œWhile Manhattan has been in the spotlight, local trips taken by people in outer boroughs and suburbs โ€” places home to many of congestion pricingโ€™s most vociferous critics โ€” have reclaimed the most travel time.โ€

Itโ€™s all so dumb! Itโ€™s a bike lane! Itโ€™s not like the studio people werenโ€™t gonna park in the bike lane all day everyday anyway!

28.01.2026 00:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Can you imagine being so mad about a bike lane that you bribe a mayorโ€™s deputy to stop the bike lane, but the administration you bribed is so ineptly corrupt that your bribery is incrementally covered by excellent local journalism for years after you first got mad about the bike lane?

How to Read NYC Crime Stats Like an Expert While major crimes like murder and robbery are declining, researchers say housing, poverty, and quality-of-life factors also shape how safe neighborhoods feel.

The number of those major crimes in the city all fell sharply last year โ€” with some plunging to their lowest levels in modern recorded history.

How much attention should New Yorkers pay to figures like these? Here's what to know:

โ€œLiterally had to take the earbuds out and pause the radio news broadcast about a riot in progress at the Capitol to get the best news of my life.โ€

Ha! Now that I think about it, this is also a solid metaphor advocating for logging off in general, isnโ€™t it

This is what happens when you elect a guy who actually bikes instead of a guy who double parks in a bike lane sideways.

Oh, and one other part of this set of memories -- this was also the first time I ever saw my wife hold our kid! It was deep COVID era, & because of stringent hospital visitor restrictions only one of us was ever allowed in the NICU at a time.

06.01.2026 19:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

We played "No Sleep till Brooklyn" by the Beastie Boys as I drove home at approximately 5mph over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Kiddo was already, of course, fast asleep.

06.01.2026 19:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There aren't always a lot of reasons for celebrating in a hospital, especially in an ICU setting, so that round of applause and congratulations hits you right in the soul.

06.01.2026 19:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I was carrying my kid for the first time beyond the watchful eye of a NICU nurse, so I was already at a pretty nervous baseline, and I could barely find my way out of the hospital through tear-blurred vision.

06.01.2026 19:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Any NICU stay is taxing and emotional, but the peak for us was the discharge and the walk out: the NICU nurses and staffers line the hallway to clap and congratulate the graduating family. I was already on a emotional rollercoaster but I lost it at that point.

06.01.2026 19:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Around this time 5 years ago today, I found out that my kid would finally be coming home after 30 days in the NICU.

Literally had to take my earbuds out and pause the radio news broadcast about a riot in progress at the Capitol to get the best news of my life.

Unforgettable day, indeed.

Ah, just saw your quote post, local folks are probably the better option but let me know if that falls through

Hello! I have the micro-print version that is a single volume, unabridged, but which requires a magnifying lens to be of use -- this one: global.oup.com/academic/pro... if that's of interest, I'm sure we could figure it out, it sees relatively little (though not zero!) use in our home

โ€œThis low death rate, in turn, contributes to New Yorkโ€™s high life expectancy, which according to provisional data reached 83.2 years in 2024, about 4 years higher than the national average.โ€

We're bigger by population than like 38 of the 50 states and *just* missed 300 homicides. Really impressive stuff.
