Mount Wilson Observatory | Talks & Telescopes: Dr. Mike Brown

Hey if you're in LA tomorrow evening and looking to escape (some of) the heat, come on up to Mt. Wilson and listen to me tell stories about the search for Planet Nine then stay late and look through the telescopes to do a little searching yourself.

Here is a bonus Patch for you

I donโ€™t feel particularly old today. Did he, on his last day? Iโ€™ll never know. I always wondered what it would feel like to be precisely this many days old. Today, it feels like I am happy to still be here and hope to stick around for a while yet and I wish he was here to share it still. (5/5)

05.08.2025 21:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 77    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 8    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I now have days to live that he never got. Maybe I will meet grandchildren (no time soon please ok?), learn to love my daughterโ€™s partner. Maybe I will become an old pirate (space pirate rather than sea pirate, I think, but might still need the hoop earring). (4/5)

05.08.2025 21:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 44    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 6    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I also think about all of the things I wish he could have done. Like meet my wife. Meet his granddaughter. Iโ€™m pretty sure he would have enjoyed getting to know both of them. But it never happened. Will never happen. (3/5)

I think a lot about all of the things he didnโ€™t get to do that he wanted to do. Sail around the world. Move to Key West. Become an old pirate with a gold hoop earring (ok, he was on his way on that one). But cancer took him long before any of that could happen. (2/5)

My father died a couple of months after his 60 birthday. This was 26 years ago. Iโ€™ve thought about todayโ€™s date, August 5th, 2025, for these past 26 years. Today, I am the same number of days old he was on the day he died. Every day I live past today is a day he didnโ€™t have. (1/5)

The same bear, snoozing while floating in the pool

He literally had one elbow on a step and the rest of his body is floating. His eyes are closed. He is dreaming of an unlocked trash can

A brown colored black bear chilling in the pool on a hot day. He has the bare necessities. He might like some fancy ants though.

Such a weird little earthquake here in Southern California this morning. Very very slight rattling but it lasted much longer than I would guess it would have for how close it was (close usually means short and sharp). Curious to hear the story of this one.

I always thought that one was a little weird. If not for the clustering the key evidence for P9 goes away

29.07.2025 03:30 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

ah, yeah, it is simply that the object is at the lower bound of where things aren't stuck to P9. So if P9 is a little more distant it isn't bound.

You hear about Pluto? He's still not adopted - that's messed up! But so is Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Mercury and Saturn. What on Earth is going on? Make Seattle Humane part of your orbit and get these planetary puppies one giant step home!
