So it pushes upward instead. The fact that it's silicone might account for the more rounded shape of it, since most ice spikes that come from plastic trays are smaller and sharper. I'll see if I can find an example pic.

My understanding of the phenomenon is that it would be less likely to happen in a silicone tray, but isn't impossible. The solid ice surrounding the cube is the most important element. Imagine a cylinder of liquid water surrounded by solid ice, as that it expands it wants to expand out but can't.

This can often happen in the last cube that freezes in rigid plastic trays. Water expands as it freezes & presses against the container walls which don't deform, so that pressure ends up focused back inward. That pressure pushes some of the unfrozen water up through a weak spot, which then freezes.
