At a time when there is a world-wide increase in authoritarianism, when there is a choice of doing something in a non-invasive surveillance way vs. a massive increased surveillance way (and there are non-invasive solutions here) implementing the high surveillance one is a choice and a statement.

It's really quite telling that new road tunnels don't present an opportunity for driverless vehicles. For example, the Silvertown Road Tunnel Cycle Shuttle is supposedly innovative, but clearly TfL discarded or didn't even consider making it driverless.

Yet supposedly this tech is nearly ready. πŸ€”

The Vegas Loop Is Getting Progressively More Stupid
YouTube video by Ray Delahanty | CityNerd The Vegas Loop Is Getting Progressively More Stupid

This video is amazing, the whole loop thing just gets more absurd the more they build. And yet, as the video shows, it fits worryingly well within the kind of nonsense Las Vegas depends upon. And of course, not a driverless car in sight!

I feel like every single day I need to post a reminder: if you ask an LLM about itself it DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ITS INNER WORKINGS and WILL NOT TELL YOU ANYTHING ACTUALLY ABOUT ITSELF. It just (as it always does) will make up some plausible sounding answer.

ITV’s Tour de France coverage may be over for good, but polo shirt season carries on regardless.

Tbh Gary Imlach should just start a purely polo shirt focussed career now.

Great paper with insights on transport.

Eg. DfT’s habit of saying the right things on health but not doing all the much to improve it.

Secretly Society: Jens Lekman Pt. 1 - The Cherry Trees Are Still In Blossom Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman's beginnings as a musician in Gothenburg, Sweden, his signing to Secretly Canadian, and the making of his long-lost cult compilation album 2005’s Oh You’re So Sil...

I figured they were a bit involved but if you’re keen - there’s a whole two part podcast from secretly
Canadian that has some lovely stuff from Jen on re-recording the albums. secretlysociety.libsyn.com/jens-lekman-... and secretlysociety.libsyn.com/jens-lekman-...

Given my emusic sub was something mad like 10p a track, I’m not sure how ethical I was either!

For Swedish musician Jens Lekman, recrafting old albums was a lesson in self-love Two of Jens Lekman's early albums were taken off streaming services due to sample clearance issues. During the pandemic, the singer recrafted and revisited his old work.

Not sure how I missed Jens Lekman re-recording his first two albums to dodge sample clearance.

Kind of in awe of how blatant his samples have been, tbh - including on the more recent postcards project.

Normal fraud only results in financial loss for investors. Tesla's driving automation is horrifyingly novel in that the spectacle required to build confidence in a fantasy that will never be delivered also kills people. Musk's wealth only reached its obscene heights from on top of a stack of corpses

When someone dies using Autopilot, Tesla says A) they deserved it, B) their death is offset by Autopilot's fake safety advantage, and C) soon they will "solve self-driving" and make all road deaths a thing of the past. These are all lies. The only offset for these deaths is more wealth for Elon Musk

It's just absurd how much hype and marketing is leading the push on autonomous vehicles and wider AI.

We need a healthy scepticism. And some meaningful regulation!

Do we also need HVM that’s actually been developed on the basis that it’s to go between Cycleway and carriageway, rather than footway and carriageway?

North Korea TV censors Alan Titchmarsh's trousers The gardening presenter fell foul of the secretive state's strict rules because of his choice of attire.

It has suddenly struck me that when I leave the BBC on Thursday, this is going to be my last byline on the news website. As a monument to a career, I will take it.

It’s still weird that he’s never actually published a book on Le Tour.

It was only an β€œe-bike crash” in the sense that the driver of a Landrover Discovery got upset by the e-bike lights (because he was dealing drugs in his car), chased them ONE MILE and then hit them, killing the woman who was on the back and seriously injuring the cyclist.

Come on, BBC.
