There is a value in sceptical questions and scrutiny, and yes - sometimes - that means turning down projects. Planning isn’t about just saying yes because you like a technology.

Yeah. Plenty of the traffic in my patch of Sydenham is people who’ve turned off it. Arguably this is how strategic roads naturally function in a city - trip lengths are short because it’s not a motorway joining cities, and you have a nearer supermarket/DIY store etc.

And as someone who now lives by the south circular and uses it quite regularly it is a similar phenomenon to the A4 observation. The busy bits are because it’s where joining and leaving local journeys are overlapping. It’s a rare journey that uses it strategically.

Call me mean, but I suspect he’s not likely to win over a green audience with his support for major road building, new nuclear, and new airports as part of those real policies.

It’s a shame - I was hoping the book might make some strong points but it’s so wedded to a failed economic model.

If the Bakerloop is the answer to “we don’t have the money to build the Bakerloo line, but we need more capacity”, then what is the answer to “we don’t have money to make A2 safe to cycle on, but we need to”? It’s already 20mph, two people have been arrested in these crashes. Is it enforcement? Hmm.

Is it actually good enough to have a road with a superloop bus on it, where we know there are a lot of people cycling now, and no improvement in cycle facilities against when the red routes were put in place three decades ago?

By my understanding - just for people who were cycling - we’ve had a fatality on Old Kent Road (A2) in November, a serious collision further down the A2 at Deptford in December and now a further fatality, again on the A2 in New Cross

We know what makes these roads safe. Why aren’t we doing it?
