After it happens, I don’t know what trade negotiations look like with a president Vance but I sort of imagine he will say some really insulting stuff about our country but not actually care about the details all that much.

I think keeping the Americans at the table is a good strategy. If we can keep them talking we can hopefully just sort of run out the clock on the Trump presidency.

Trump has repeatedly, at every opportunity, clarified to reporters that he isn’t joking about this. Calling it a joke at this point is basically sticking your head in the sand.

A lot of people on here talking about Woke 2 but I’m excited for cancel culture 2, where people who say really racist things are actually ejected from public life rather than just sort of coming back after a brief period of fake self reflection.

It’s not just NIMBYs. Where I see it the most is lurking on subreddits for job seekers. Lots of unemployed people eager to blame immigrants. This was a very common thing throughout history but like, I was unemployed for a fucking year during the Great Recession and I never fell for that.

We’ve always had racism in our society but it feels like this kind of anti immigrant thing has become normalized recently in a way I don’t think it ever has been in my lifetime.

We need to actually do anti racism again, it’s crazy to me that people have been blaming Indian students for the housing crisis and not facing any consequences.

It has implications that scare a lot of people but also actual lives are at stake and it feels cowardly to me that the government is dragging its feet on this. I think sooner or later it’ll get decided by the courts instead, which is I guess the Canadian way.

The biggest actual problem with Canadian refugee law is that it treats the US as a safe third country which it fairly obviously is not at this point.

FWIW I know a number of Americans who have moved here largely to be able to live in freedom and safety and be themselves. None are legally refugees, but there are a lot of options for someone who wants to move here.

Like it’s kind of selfish to only care about refugee rights in a country where you imagine you might someday have to be one.

If you look at the big list of countries by refugees per capita here, Canada ranks 40th. We could and should do better. But when I see Americans (rank 74) criticize it as a way to try put down Canadians they perceive as being too “smug,” it feels like bad faith.

Guy who’s furious anyone would imply he’s lost, he knows exactly where he is.

If they actually invaded I’m sure we’d see some very sassy, clever signs at peace marches across the US but short of that I don’t think most Americans would notice.
