I sort of think you miss the point of a 'cover'. Saying it should or shouldn't be a certain thing is reductive, gatekeeping and pointless. Any art is subjective to interpretation and reinvention. The original concept becomes moot at the point of its introduction to an audience.

Doesn't the song's strength lie in the fact it can be about both without materially changing the lyric?
