From the holodeck on TNG to the EMH on Voyager, holograms have had the ability to physically impact "real" things. The real innovation here, to my mind, is the lack of any perceivable holoemitters.

I mean... On paper and in practice, she's a real trip.

It's also possible that photonic beings are bound by similar laws of physics as organics in that matter and energy interchangeable, to a degree. But the idea of there being carbon-based, silica based, extending to photonic...

It makes her an unreliable narrator which enables the fourth wall breaks but is also a lot more honest about reality and consciousness and what is empirical than we, as a collective of perpetually-hallucinating organic compounds manifesting as a sentience, are comfortable admitting.

If you think of Sam as a decentralized consciousness constantly processing data into a semi-cogent organic-experience-emulator (like a consciousness lucid dreaming), the rest of the episode also makes more sense? To me anyhow.

Like, the equivalent of the weight of her is borne by all the things that make up the technological landscape in the same way the dirt, in all its composite parts, support our weights as organics.

I take the position that SAM as we see her is an interpretation of what organics are but that, as an entity, she has an abstract, limited omnipresence/ omniscience where any local technology becomes an element of her presence.

I'm actually ok with that characterization.
