All the Scottish cafes now serve pumpkin spice lattes in the fall, which seems very out of place because no no one eats pumpkin pie here, so pumpkin spice is not a thing. But haggis spice is pretty similar -- nutmeg, allspice, mace. Why don't they sell these as haggis spice lattes? Sounds delicious!

I recommend this episode of CBC's The House dedicated to whether Canada can meet its climate goals (and not b/c I'm the first guest!). It'll be interesting even to non-Canadians, to hear how Canada is struggling over climate policy amid outside pressures. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s...

It's worth remembering that the number of female Star Trek novelists once FAR exceeded the number of male ones. The guys who made it into our exclusive fellowship in those days were invariably the really good ones. John M. (Mike) Ford. Peter David. (And yeah, @peter.petermorwood.com.) (1/2)

The Renewable Illusion: Why Fossil Fuels Keep Winning Global renewables hit records in 2024, but fossil fuel use still rises. Here’s why solar’s surge isn’t enoughβ€”and what the latest energy data really shows.

1. This is something I've been saying for 25 years, but it's hard to get many people to listen. What counts is not the new energy sources you add, but the old ones you retire. Unfortunately it's politically easier to build renewables than to shutter fossil fuels.🧡

β€œNo Kings” is one of the sharpest bits of political branding/rhetoric in a while. Extremely concise and in every headline, historically rooted, specific to the American tradition but also universalist, nails what’s exceptional about Trump in a way that almost all factions in opposition can endorse.

I did not find the federal government to be rife with waste, fraud and abuse. I was expecting some more easy wins. I was hoping for opportunity to cut waste, fraud and abuse. And I do believe that there is a lot of waste. There's minimal amounts of fraud. And abuse, to me, feels relatively nonexistent. And the reason is β€” I think we have a bias as people coming from the tech industry where we worked at companies, you know, such as Google, Facebook, these companies that have plenty of money, are funded by investors and have lots of people kind of sitting around doing nothing.

I went to LifeLabs today and the guy drawing blood told me the strike ended last week because they’re in negotiations now. I guess they have a big backlog to get through? Or maybe they’re just slow.

That's because they're on strike since February. The US company that owns them hasn't agreed to a contract.

BC’s LifeLabs Strike Highlights the Risks of Foreign Ownership | The Tyee The labour dispute raises concerns about global firms controlling Canadians’ medical services and health data.

The months-long strike at British Columbia’s LifeLabs has raised questions about foreign ownership of medical services and Canadians’ health data.

That such a large part of Canada’s health infrastructure is owned by a massive foreign company is cause for concern, notes one expert.

Really incredible story unraveling in this thread, where Amazon and other sites have seemingly been able to sell an academic textbook that was withdrawn in 2021 and never actually printed or published, without the knowledge of the press, editors or contributors. Something has gone deeply wrong!
