One more thing--to be clear the legislation only raised the floor. Adjuncts above this rate aren't automatically affected, but raising the floor compresses everyone's pay upwards over time.

So a 3 hour course with a 15 week academic term would need to be paid $6849.90 for the course. Prior to 2020, there were adjuncts getting paid a third of that for an entire semester course. This is what union power can do. [end 🧵]

The AB736 formula is that the new legislative minimum is $152.22 per course hour per week. That is, the minimum amount an adjunct can be paid is $152.22 x [number of course hours per week] x [number of weeks in the academic term.] 🧵

This year the increase in the California minimum wage, effective January 1, 2026 is 2.49%, of $16.90 per hour. 🧵

The bill indexed the minimum to the rate of increase in the California state minimum wage, which is another piece of legislation won by SEIU under Governor Brown as part of our "fight for 15." Every August, the Dept of Finance sets the increase for January the next year. dof.ca.gov/wp-content/u...

AB736 was negotiated between SEIU and the Association of California Independent Colleges & Universities to achieve our goal of raising labor standards and the employers' goal of avoiding costly litigation about application of the labor code to adjuncts. 🧵

Here is a wonky thread about work I did I'm proud of. In 2020, SEIU sponsored AB736 in California that effectively established a prevailing wage standard for adjunct professors at private colleges who are hired and paid per course they teach. 🧵
