so I protest offline, I talk to my family and my community offline, I plan for darker times away from public social media, I do the work - and then I have to have things that are good right now, things I can say are worth staying alive and staying positive for. otherwise I’m going burn out early.

it’s not that I don’t care - I care intensely - but unlike a lot of settlers who talk up running away to somewhere else I’m here forever. This is my home. I do actually have to believe it can get better and that there are things worth fighting for, because I’m never going anywhere else.

my story is very clearly a critical response to another story, and so its central question at first is “if your parents were murdered by right wing extremists with magic powers and they framed your mom’s lesbian best friend and got away with it, what does that mean to you? how do you respond?”

Blood Ties and Brickways is essentially The Magicians x Charmed x Karen Marie Moning’s Faefever quintet; there are multiple prequel/midquel web novellas out or in progress now but the main book is about a girl named Meg who sets out to solve her parents’ murders and discovers her mom was a faerie.
