TAKE ACTION: We cannot allow DEP to let these dirty coal plants to continue operating, potentially reaping millions in profit β while paying minimum penaltiesβwhile slowly, or perhaps never, installing required water pollution control.
Write to DEP here: secure.everyaction.com/OPHaHk0FG0iO...
Coal-fired power plants produce toxic ash from the burning of the coal, which results in whatβs known as βcoal bottom ash transport water.β It often contains concentrated pollutants like arsenic and mercury.
09.02.2026 22:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Now, however, they claim the opposite: they can become profitable because of the building of energy-hungry data centers & the lack of a meaningful plan in the Commonwealth to limit or price carbon pollution.
09.02.2026 22:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0These plants publicly committed to retiring in 2028. They told DEP that they werenβt making enough money to justify keeping their facilities up to date with water pollution controls, citing market forces that made the power from coal-fired power plants too expensive to compete.
09.02.2026 22:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Because the owners of these coal plants want to keep making money, they are seeking an agreement with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to keep operating & keep polluting past their expiration date.

09.02.2026 22:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We need to look at a future where our energy is more reliable and cheaper.
Today, PennFuture and @conservationpa.bsky.social share the long-term solutions for #EnergyAffordability in PA.
PAβs energy future is being shaped right now β and students are paying attention
CVPA & @pennfuture.bsky.social recently met with CMU students to talk about fracking who highlight why transparency, accountability, and smart clean energy investments matter more than ever www.tiktok.com/t/ZThf9QVsR/
PennFuture Reacts to Governor Shapiro's PA Budget 2026-27 Address:
Pennsylvanians need more than a failed βall-of-the-aboveβ approach that will only increase dependence on dirty, volatile, and unreliable fossil fuels.

PennFuture's Kat Marquez spoke at the community meeting on the data center project near Homer City.
βIs it better than coal? Not really. While you can argue it emits less carbon dioxide, it does release higher methane gas and radium, which poisons our air and water.β

29.01.2026 18:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0With thousands of clean energy projects stuck in the approval process and a surge of demand from energy-intensive data centers, the price cap serves as a safeguard against ratepayer harm caused by market dysfunctions.
29.01.2026 18:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If adopted, the cap will protect Pennsylvanians sharp price spikes without harming grid reliability.
29.01.2026 18:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This cap will keep electricity affordable for residents while PJM fixes issues with the broken capacity market.
29.01.2026 18:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0PennFuture submitted comments in support of a price cap that limits how much Pennsylvanians pay for electric capacity.
29.01.2026 18:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0πΈPennsylvanians want relief from our high energy bills.
βThatβs why this week PennFuture submitted comments to regional grid operator PJM, urging them to fix their broken system before sticking Pennsylvanians with the cost.
Data centers = massive demand.
Clean energy = stuck in line.
Fossil fuels = volatile prices.
The result? PA families pay more.
Our plan cuts costs by building affordable renewables faster β and making big energy users pay their fair share: action.conservationpa.org/a/energy-aff...
