it's just so weird to live in a country where the primary centre-right political formation increasingly lacks even any commodity-grade patriotism

It is too much for some people that this country have any dignity

There's a certain amount of elite replacement as the new regime has to find lands for the new elites, and remaining Roman elites have their social world shrunk considerably as travel becomes more difficult and having friends in the wrong kingdom could get you in trouble

the reduced economy and population means less surplus to skim, and less things to spend that surplus on, while more of that surplus gets destroyed in wars and conflicts that are now local rather than far away

just didn't quite appreciate the extent that the whole fiscal system generated the higher order economic activity that enabled them to be something more than local toughs
