The vast majority of wall falls occur in the San Diego and El Paso areas, but if new wall construction in southern Arizona continues as planned we are sure to see an increase in these sorts of deaths here in Pima county.

In CBP’s data, they routinely mislabel falls from the border barrier as “exposure” deaths or neglect to report them at all.

Falls from the border wall accounted for at least 87 deaths in just California, New Mexico, El Paso, and Yuma alone, almost all occurring since new border wall construction under the first Trump administration.

None of the Use of Force deaths from the three sectors where we had full access to this information were reported by the OPR, and only 3 of the 21 in-custody deaths.

This serves to massively misrepresent the extent of Border Patrol’s involvement in the migrant death crisis.

OPR records deaths where BP agents were present as “medical distress”, implying that they were involved in a rescue attempt, even when that agent’s own actions may have led to the death, such as pursuits on foot or, at times, when the individual was in custody.

Tasked with investigating and reporting CBP-related deaths, the OPR instead serves to cover up cases, routinely recording different causes of death than those reported by the local medical examiners or neglecting to report relevant cases at all.

Our migrant death database shows how Border Patrol, already the deadliest federal law enforcement agency, lies about BP-related cases through its so-called Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

Data for Yuma and El Centro Sectors include Yuma county in Arizona, and Imperial and Riverside counties in California.

The following charts compare our data with CBP. San Diego sector data includes data from San Diego county.

To correct this undercount, as well as many other serious errors in CBP’s reporting, we compared our data on a case-by-case level with CBP’s data, obtained by FOIA request.

Our new database shows that the official CBP data heavily undercounts migrant deaths by 20-40%, and for some years we record as many as 4 times the official number.

We are a small group of volunteers and have only scratched the surface of the analysis that this database makes possible. We urge researchers and journalists to use this as a resource. Access to more detailed data and source material is available upon request.

Our database compiles information obtained via public records requests to local medical examiners, coroners, police, and other sources, and compared this data case-by-case with CBP’s data.

This data will not bring anyone back or undo the decades of suffering and death caused by US border policy, and it does not account for the tens of thousands of disappeared—but it is the most comprehensive record to date of people who died crossing the border.

As we move into the hottest and deadliest months on the US-Mexico border, No More Deaths is releasing a comprehensive database and map of recovered migrant remains for the entire southern land border.

Violence like this occurs seldom to aid workers, but DAILY to those crossing the borderlands.

There is no justification for state violence.

Federal agents with Homeland Security drew firearms at humanitarian aid workers and proceeded to forcefully detain them.

We fear that as more public lands become military zones we will witness increased militarization on tribal lands, escalated violence for those crossing, and the persecution of those who render humanitarian aid.

This makes routine border enforcement an even more violent tool for the escalation of Trump’s carceral attack on migrants.

The handover of public lands to the military is used as a tactic against those crossing the border by adding a criminal charge onto what is only a civil violation.
