As usual, the media is forcing a situation into a binary: If you’re not grieving the CEO’s death, you’re celebrating it. I’m neither; I’m indifferent. The death of someone whose actions systematically undermined people’s wellbeing gets a shrug from me. I only grieve the loss of people whose net moral impact was positive.

A) sarcasm. B) some would argue that yes, your statement is accurate.

Language matters. We must catch the deceptive word choices that the media fails to call out. Presidents do not “appoint” ambassadors. They nominate, and each nominee then undergoes the Senate confirmation process. None of these personnel “appointments” is a done deal yet. Don’t forfeit.

What's the alternative? To look around at all the need and do nothing because I can't do everything? That might be the most defeatist of all the cognitive distortions. So, no, I'll keep helping one starfish at a time and trust that it is meaningful action. 8/9

I don't have enough money or time to alleviate all of the needs of those recipients, but I believe my little bit still makes a difference to them. 7/9

Solo meliorism is why I "bother" to pledge $1 to a Patreon creator, or give $5 or $10 to a charity. It's one bottle of water for someone living on the street. It's one call to one Senator about one bill to help one vulnerable group (one galaxy*). 6/9

Group meliorism is motivating -- you see others trying, so you try even harder. When it's solo, we have to take it on faith that our small act is inherently worth doing, even if we don't know whether anyone else is amplifying our effort with their own. 5/9

But that last one is different. Do you see it? The difference is that the bucket brigade and the tug-of-war team and the soldiers all see one another doing their small part, but individuals calling their congressperson typically do so in isolation. 4/9

I realize now that that story is an illustration of meliorism, and I've also realized recently that I live by meliorism. It's the idea that the smallest of helpful actions is worth doing. 2/9
