The data is clear. All CA students need & deserve equal access to school libraries with current collections curated by trained librarians. We need a state level library lead to help erase access disparity. CA limits our kids’ access to books without even widespread banning.

tinyurl.com/supportsb478 CA has the lowest number of school librarians per student in the country. By FAR. There is no one at the state level who oversees school libraries in CA, so most school districts ignore state law mandating certificated librarians in all schools.

Many kids are unable to make it to the public library. They can’t drive, often times the library isn’t in walking distance. It’s not that their grown-ups don’t want them to be library kids.

This may sound weird, but toothpaste after a burn like that soothes it and helps prevent blisters. Just basic white toothpaste slathered over it and left alone to dry. Leave it on for a few hours. Ask me how I know. 🤦🏻‍♀️

We have so many societal reasons for the literacy problem and no collective will to do the right thing. All of the big movements in education during my career so far seemed to have only made it worse.

Except that you got that annoying peaches song from the 90s in my head.

Yes, my great teachers changed my life. No question. My parents never read, so I didn’t have that model at home. I became a teacher to do the same. Now I am a librarian to learn how to have reach across the whole school. This work is so important. I just hear Maryanne Wolf speak; it was inspiring.

If public libraries could find ways to get kids reading grades 3-8 with people in their branches, they would be helping us out in the schools a lot. So many kids in middle grades are reading below a 3rd grade level and just need more time and attention they they can get at school.

With regard to the librarian’s role. Beyond collection development and marketing, kids need to read with people. They need to hear good readers while they follow along, and they need to read aloud to people who will listen and encourage them.

We read through many Newberry winners each year in the 80s in my elementary school as a whole class. I have noticed a serious shift in how kids are being taught today. There is a much greater focus on short texts and treating the text as a job to get through.

My observations of the current shift in teaching are directly related to how different my own experience was as a child in a low income school (where I read many novels in a classroom setting with deep discussions) and as a teacher early in my career (during a time when core novels were centered).

No wonder kids hate reading. My own daughter who is an absolute bookworm never read a full novel in a classroom setting until EIGHTH grade. She read on her own, but how many of her classmates never did? And never read anything long enough to get deeply lost in it? Most kids are pretending to read.

The way that schools started shifting to constant text annotating has forced kids to see reading as a chore. They are given short texts to highlight and annotate with no purpose to the reading except to annotate and summarize. Who reads like that?

I don’t say it either. I call him the shadow.
