I talk to Genuine Taste co-founder Emily Farrar about why fat is critical to flavour and adoption, lessons from the first wave of alt-protein hype, and how they're delivering ~100x efficiencies vs competitors.
Thinking its time to do a little "Time to Build" series on some of the opportunities to build clean growth.
This is a generational opportunity, but one that could easily be missed by doubling down on the status quo and the old tech/energy system
Electrification is a huge market opportunity
"Global revenues of key electrification technologies such as EVs and heat pumps are already three times those of solar panels and wind turbines, and are projected by the IEA to be eight times larger by 2035."

New episode out this morning with Apoorv Sinha, CEO at @carbonupcycling.bsky.social!
We talk about how:
- Scaling low-carbon cement
- Their recent $25.4M raise from Builders Vision
- Building industry partnerships
And the future of industrial policy and infrastructure in Canada
Huge congrats to @carbonupcycling.bsky.social on closing an $18M investment from Builders Vision!
I got to sit down with Apoorv, CEO and co-founder, to talk about the raise and how we scale low-carbon concrete to build Canada.
Subscribe here to get the episode when it drops tomorrow!
I think we'll see this first in Ontario with Bill 5.
We have environmental / health protections for a reason, and it seems like we're forgetting why.
Done poorly, this looks like a short spurt of expansion followed by a health/environment crisis, loss of public support, and contraction.
In the rush to cut red tape, build more, etc it seems increasingly likely that we're going to create some really bad side effects.
E.g. industrial plants with a rubber stamp EA discharging into drinking water, hazardous air pollution, etc.
Timely new episode out today with @oliverdavidkrieg.bsky.social from Intelligent City to talk about their approach to scaling home building using mass timber, parametric design, and industrialized construction.

Very surprised to not see Wilkinson in this new cabinet. Maybe itβs more Smith appeasement(?) but he seemed to be doing good work on clean industry
13.05.2025 15:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thereβs a thread over on The Other Place complaining that ABβs $95 carbon price is double that of Quebecβs cap and trade permits (currently around $40).
But it misses the mark for 2 big reasons:
I'm hopeful that the latter two will find the capital they need to keep going.
For Lion, could QC step in as a buyer? Protect the home-grown IP until it gets back on its feet vs pulling the rug?
Rough start to the week:
- Lion Electric couldn't secure backing from QC, will likely be sold
- Li-Cycle's on the edge of insolvency, also looking for a buyer
- General Fusion lays off 1/4 of staff
Lots of important climate solutions and strong Canadian IP at risk

All in, a tough trade-off that hopefully gives climate policy more breathing room.
18.03.2025 19:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 04/ Poilievre going after industrial carbon pricing just seems desperate. Are there no other ideas on the table? It's a tactic you'd see from Danielle Smith or Trump - wrapped in "pro business" but not actually very good for business.
18.03.2025 19:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0having a carbon price that pushed prices up a bit, but not enough to make switching to low-carbon products an obvious choice. People got stuck paying more for fuel, but couldn't make the math work for heat pumps, EVs etc.
3/ Carney says he like carrots over sticks, but you need both to be effective
1/ Timing mattered a lot for carbon pricing. It's a tough sell when you're facing inflation and affordability challenges. But scrapping it entirely makes it harder to revisit again, even if it makes more sense in the future
2/ It wasn't strong enough? It seems like we got stuck between
I wrote about Carney scrapping the consumer carbon price in this week's newsletter: news.climatetechcanada.ca/p/axing-the-...
