You'd think @discord.com would give it at least another month before asking to put our pii up for sale on the dark web again

Seems like the decent thing to do

........as an atheist who was taught you don't out yourself if you ever want to be in a position of authority...can't say I love the (probably sworn) public interrogation of religious beliefs

even if they are hypocrites, and deserve all the sick punishments dreamed up by their brethren

tbf lots of real historical villains felt righteous anger when doing something monstrous, "giving in" isn't just about permitting yourself to seethe

Did we ever figure out if the ๐Ÿ† injection thing for genitals with better lift was completely made up? Would've dismissed it outright if I hadn't read the seam ripper scandal first, but now I have a tiny shred of credulousness.

What you see right before you read a half dozen posts correcting piddling Factual Inaccuracies about elon's various ventures:

And seeking manslaughter only, when he was the only other person in the room and confessed!

Innocent people have gotten capital charges on thin evidence. To be a white failure in a red town.

Pretty sure nobody's asking to see a drunk's guns, unless they intend to take them away.

British Woman shot by dad in Texas after 'arguing about Donald Trump' Lucy Harrison, 23, was alone in a bedroom at her father's home in Texas when she was shot dead.

A MAGA freak in Texas murdered his own daughter in cold blood after they had an argument about Trump.

A grand jury in the Dallas area then *declined to indict him*, and he has not yet faced charges.

Seems like many Texans believe a man has the right to kill his own child for disobedience.

Just blabbed something completely unnecessary that embarrassed my mom, who was already wound up about the reimbursement

Accidentally figured out what it feels like to be completely ignorant of politics

Any obscure country w/o major human rights probs): I know nothing, care nothing, think I'm mostly unaffected by anything about its politics. Not stressed about its leadership. Not interested in swaying its elections.

So, we got a stop payment.

Aaaaaaaand...the letter arrived 1h later.

14 days for $54.

14 DAYS.

That's the last time we ever use USPS registered mail.

Ah. I've never charged anything back because many issue such dire threats about never doing business with you again, but who would want to if they're cheats?

Plus any of them doing that design dispute resolution through customer service to be as hostile as possible these days.

Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults.

Hey folks โ€“

Iโ€™ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so todayโ€™s announcement on our blog is something Iโ€™ve been pretty involved with. Iโ€™ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured Iโ€™d add some more context to today's news.

I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults.

And if you are one of the smaller subset of folks that we can't definitively pre-identify, then still, you only have to do it if you're accessing age-restricted servers or channels, or changing certain settings. That's really not most users. (Altho... might be more Redditors, tbh.)

Last, I know that there is concern about privacy and data leaks. That's a real concern. The selfie system is built purely client-side, it never leaves your device, and we did that intentionally. That'll work for a bunch of users who aren't pre-identified as adults. But if you do end up in the ID bucket, then yeah, you're right that has some risk. We're doing what we can to minimize this by working with our range of partners (who are different partners than the data leak you read about), and if it's any help, we learned a lot internally from the last issue. But I get if that doesn't necessarily inspire more confidence.

Anyway, weโ€™ll be sharing more next month as we get closer to the global roll out about the system, including the technology behind it in March. I honestly wouldn't be happy if we didn't build something good and I am excited about what weโ€™re launching, but please let us know what you think when we share more details.

And I really appreciate everybody's feedback here today. Weโ€™re definitely reading it!

Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)

A lot of the things techie types tend to see as un-necessary nice-to-haves, or see as 'dumbing it down for normies' are actually critically important for people to be able to enmesh themselves and dance with a given technological system

this is a subject that's near and dear to my heart

1. no you didn't, you retconning fucks

2. your decades of anti-governance "free market" "government never functions" propaganda paved the way for the complete authoritarian decimation of labor, consumer, environmental protections

you're going to see a LOT of this sort of retconning (I was always on the right side of history) by all the very loud people who were on the wrong side of history. Especially as Trump's health fails. we need a big tent to dismantle fascism, but a little accountability might be nice as a treat

What does the new law say?
Bill C-3, which came into force on December 15, 2025, reinstates citizenship by descent beyond the first generation. In 2009, the Conservative government had restricted access to citizenship. Canadians born abroad could therefore only pass on their Canadian citizenship if their child was born in Canada. The law was ruled unconstitutional by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Now, to be eligible for Canadian citizenship by descent, a person born abroad before the coming into force of Bill C-3 must have an ancestor who became a Canadian citizen on or after January 1, 1947 (the date the status of Canadian citizenship was created).

The new law also specifies that a person can become a citizen if one of their deceased parents or grandparents had obtained citizenship status upon the law's entry into force.

FYI Americans: if you had Canadian grandparents/parents: you may be Canadian
