Massively enjoyed attending the @NessofBrodgar Summer #Exhibition @OrkneyMuseums last night. Story of the Ness and the people/research behind our current understanding of the site and its inhabitants told through stunning displays of #finds. It’s a must-see!! #Orkney #archaeology

A good lick of pigmented wax brought its original good looks to life again, and I finally installed some carefully placed edge protection to save wandering visitors’ fingers from injury.

B.98 went into store while the new #ScapaFlowMuseum was built. The team installed it early this year but it badly needed some specialist TLC! After a good conservation clean it needed some further treatment to stabilise corroded areas and get rid of the many rust stains.

In 2015, @OrkneyMuseums lent it to @NatMusRN for their 2016 centenary exhibition in @PompeyDockyard about the Battle of Jutland, and it was one of the first objects I assessed when I joined their #conservation team! B.98’s gun returned to Orkney when the #exhibition closed.

B.98 only got as far as Sanday before breaking her tow and running aground at Lopness where much of her remains today. This 8.8cm SK L/45 deck gun was salvaged and eventually joined the collection at the Scapa Flow Museum.

B.98 was used as the mail boat linking the interned sailors to home. She arrived at Scapa Flow on 22 June 1919 to deliver the mail, only to find the fleet sinking! When the dust had settled the British interned B.98, and eventually towed her off to be scrapped in 1920.

I've been working with a very old artefact ‘friend’. This is the B.98 gun. B.98 was a German destroyer which served throughout the #FirstWorldWar and took part in the Battle of Jutland. She was not actually interned with the rest of the German fleet in Scapa Flow.

Really pleased and excited to see that the #ScapaFlowMuseum is a finalist in @artfund’s #MuseumOfTheYear 2023. Although I only arrived in #Orkney and set up #HBConservation in September 2022, I’ve still been able to make a contribution to this fantastic new museum. #thread
