24.09.2025 03:03 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0OK β it's late and Halloween is coming up.
So I'm going to share the only spooky thing that's ever happened to me.
There are at least 6 people named Fox interred in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, according to Find-A-Grave.
Among them are Herbert Osgood Fox and Marion Osgood Fox.
To be honest, the chap in the car looked like a Herbert. π»
This is the Google street view of that north gate as it would have looked in my rear view mirror, except I would have been in the other lane.
22.09.2025 22:29 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Was there a car?
Is there a couple of spirits who drive around Sleepy Hollow Cemetery just hoping that someone will be able to guide them out?
Did the police office see no one behind me?
Or did he know to tell the couple that he had to lock them in?
I did not see the other car exit.
And thinking back, the officer never looked behind me when I pulled out, like he was acknowledging another driver behind us.
And I never saw that car on the road in my rearview mirror.
I pulled out, thanking him as I went, and I turned onto the road.
And driving away, I looked back in my side view mirror.
And I saw the officer getting into his car after closing the gate.
After about 10 minutes, the patrol car arrived, and the officer unlocked the gate.
22.09.2025 22:29 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I walked back and told the older couple that the police were on their way, and went back to our car in front of theirs. The elderly gentleman nodded and smiled.
I went back to sit in my car with everyone as we waited.
They said they would send someone over β we weren't the first to get locked in.
It would take a few minutes because the patrol car would have to get the key from the station.
Eventually, we found the north gate β which was also locked. OK....
So I looked up the Sleepy Hollow police department's non-emergency local phone number and called them.
As we drove on, discussing the odd fox, we came across another car, also looking for the north gate. We stopped and I rolled down my window. It was an older couple and we agreed they would follow us.
22.09.2025 22:29 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0At one point, we saw a fox.
The fox was trotting along the side of the road and crossed about 50 feet ahead of us. It stopped in the middle of the road and looked directly at us. And paused. We stopped.
The fox went on its way.
The roads wind around with no real plan and they aren't marked on GPS β not on Google Maps, the Toyota map system, or even Apple Maps App (which I had to search for in some folder somewhere).
We drove around a lot. Often ending up in the same places.
So we decided to drive around a bit.
When we got back to the south gate at about 4:55, it was locked already. OK....
So we started driving through the cemetery to the north gate.
At the end, we were all at the parking area near the south gate. The guide said that we could stay a look around but that the south gate closed and locked at 5:00 PM, in about 30 minutes.
But we could always go to the north gate which would still be open.
During the summer a few years ago, my in-laws were visiting from overseas and the six of us decided to do a weekend road trip to upstate New York. One stop was a walking tour of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
It's actually quite interesting, with numerous famous people's graves.
OK β it's late and Halloween is coming up.
So I'm going to share the only spooky thing that's ever happened to me.
Ok β reposting here from a thread originally shared over on teh Bad Place:
