A black and white photo of Salkantay Mountain in Peru. Its icy summit looms above a stark, rocky valley, mirrored perfectly in a still patch of meltwater, all beneath a partially cloudy Andean sky.

Face to face with natures raw power, under a canopy of stars, Volcán de Fuego pours incandescent lava down its flanks as a brooding column of ash ascends.

From the summit of Mt. Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok, the rising sun paints the ridges gold while the mountain’s shadow pierces the horizon, forming a fleeting pyramid in the sky. A still, blue crater lake and a smaller volcano can be seen below.

View atop Huayna Potosí (6,088m / 19,974ft), where a snow covered mountain peak reveals jagged dark rocks piercing the thick white snow. The foreground showcases a vast expanse of Penitente ice formations. A carved path used by hikers is visible across the bottom.

I’m off to Nepal - hiking & reconnecting with nature.

Great photo, Janet! I see them all the time, but it seems it’s always harsh light. This is lovely.

Without clouds, we lost the color really quickly, but since we were there so early we got that dawn color. It was wonderful.

Fierce winds drive off snow & ice from the peaks of Paine Grande in Patagonia's Torres del Paine. There is a whole world of drama & grandeur to be found far above in the peaks of mountains, & especially so for Patagonia!

Thanks, Paul! It really was wonderfully peaceful for a while. Then a forest service chainsaw crew came in to do some fuels management. It was a little less peaceful then. 😆

Overlooking a lake from above. The photo is exposed so the pine trees and hills surrounding the lake are nearly black. The sky behind the lake is orange, darker at the horizon and becoming more pale above. The water in the lake reflects blue sky above at the bottom right of the photo and begins to reflect the orange towards the middle. Two small islands are on the lake. Steam is rising off the far end of the lake.

This was a pretty spectacular view to take in the morning. 10/4/24.

The magnificent dead trees of Deadvlei contrast against a towering red dune, clothed in warm twilight that is so special in Namibia. A surreal, uniquely beautiful scene, so typical of this amazing country!

The deeply contorted lands of Namibia give rise to some truly unusual and otherworldly landscapes. This particular evening, fierce winds were blowing, and the combination of twilight and windblown dust blessed us with exceptional light, transforming these strange lands into the surreal.

The dunes in Namibia's Sossusvlei are all sand, except this one, and the beautiful interplay of the protruding rocks and textured sand comes to its full expression when clothed in dusk's soft, warm twilight.

The quality of light in Namibia is like none I have encountered anywhere else. It transforms Namibia's unique, at times surreal, landscapes into a world of dreams. A world of layers, punctuated by beautiful acacia trees, is painted in magical light which brings out the hidden, rich colors and textures of distant mountains.⁠

The beauty of twilight, night touched by day, light fading into dark, a world barely visible, glowing, a world we never imagined.....

A rocky island connected to the main shoreline by a narrow strip of rocks. The island and the shoreline are covered in pines and a few aspen with yellow leaves. The sky is cloudy, but pink sunlight illuminates the clouds just above the horizon.
