I am on the level of editing where I'm searching the entire novel for my most overused words and seeing if I can trim them down a bit.

I think I have about two hundred of each.

I checked this with a few other characters. It seems like the less often a character appeared, the more frequently I used their species in place of their name.

So I dug into my own statistics a bit more.
I use "Aisha" 2318 times.
I use "the jackal" 299 times.

Conversely I use "Skye" 529 times, but "the vixen" 262 times and "the fox" 95 times.

"Vince" and "the coyote" get used about 100 times each.

I think my habit has also been born of my own editing days, when I saw lots of furry writers who would spend thousands of words without any reminders of their characters' species.

I think I slightly disagree with the TVtropes page. I've definitely seen that trope in action, when a writer is so scared of using names that they use any and all descriptors, but I think it also downplays how names and pronouns can be overused too.

I think those numbers are boosted because I like to refer to characters by "the (species)" so that I'm not overusing their name or pronouns all the time.

As I work on final edits for "The Modern Pleasuremage" I took a look at word stats. The most common word, to no surprise, is the word "the" with over 7400 incidences.

Of all the things in English spelling which throw me, I think the spacing/hyphenation/lack-of-either in noun phrases is the worst. Is it "rib cage" or "ribcage"? "End table" or "endtable"?

I'm going to win.
