Excerpt from a public letter Roald Dahl wrote encouraging people to vaccinate their children. Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn’t do anything. “Are you feeling all right?” I asked her. “I feel all sleepy,” she said. In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead. The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her. On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunized against measles. I was unable to do that for Olivia in 1962 because in those days a reliable measles vaccine had not been discovered. Today a good and safe vaccine is available to every family and all you have to do is to ask your doctor to administer it.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

For the last 3 days, he’s crowed at 7:45 am exactly. A bit earlier than I’d like to wake up, but good enough.

Except.

Last night I stayed up WAY too late. Like 2 am late. So a 7:45 am wake up call is… undesirable.

Gracie, however is just doing what biology says to do.

Today I learned that roosters can work as an alarm clock (already known) *with* an “off” button (new discovery).

I currently have a rooster in my guest bathroom recuperating from a dog attack. I knew he was starting to feel better when he started crowing on Thursday.

I literally wouldn’t be able to tell you how many times I sprained my ankles as a kid. There was one point when I was four and I’d managed to sprain BOTH ankles and was stuck crawling around.

I got a super defective meat suit. 😂 But each time:

I was able to leave messages for @repricklarsen.bsky.social and Maria Cantwell tonight, but @murray.senate.gov’s voicemail was full and not accepting messages. I’ll have to try again tomorrow and *shudder* actually talk to someone. 😅

Also, “I don’t need to go to the ER tonight for this. If I can’t walk on it, I can call Karen in the morning.” 😂

As I was falling, my thoughts went “My phone is on the other side of the room! I suppose I can crawl over. I should still have three functioning limbs…”

No swelling or bruising of the ankle and I’m able to walk on it, so I’m not sure what made the sound I heard, but if I wake up tomorrow with random muscles hurting, hopefully I’ll remember this is why. 🤞🏻

Later today, stood up from knitting. Took two steps without issue. Third step, my right ankle rolled, I heard something between a crack and a snap and I pitched forward. I slowed my descent by grabbing the credenza and rotated my body enough that I landed on my left butt cheek.

I realized I really need to track my falls better. So get ready, y’all. This account is about to become my fall journal 😅

Today: slipped, started to fall and caught myself while walking to the rooster yard.

He doesn’t know how to 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m pretty sure he’s made it 78 years without giving one.

If Canada wants to take over Washington state, I’d be happy to be absorbed into BC. ❤️
