Research article entitled "Politics without Presence? The Symbolic Representation of Trans People in Germany and the Netherlands" by
Anne Louise Schotel and Liza MΓΌgge.
Abstract begins: Historically, trans people have been excluded from politics. Despite political under representation, trans interests increasingly appear on the political agenda in the Netherlands and Germany. In 2021, trans women were elected to the Dutch and German parliaments for the first time. However, increased trans visibility is accompanied by backlash and transphobia. The political representation of trans people does not follow a familiar pattern from elected descriptive representatives to increased substantive representation of interests. What mechanisms shape the political representation of trans people? We argue that symbolic representation shapes possibilities for descriptive and substantive representation of trans people.
π Winner of this year's Best Article Prize π
@alschotel.bsky.social & @lizamugge.bsky.social use of qualitative text analysis paired with in-depth interviews bring out critical insights into trans symbolic representation in π©πͺ & π³π± parliaments.

Inside Cuomoβs State-Funded Legal War Against the Women Who Accused Him of Sexual Harassment
A review by THE CITY of thousands of pages of court documents paints the most complete picture of how intensely he is battling the women who stepped forward.
A lot of tonight should go to @lindseyboylan.bsky.social who selflessly has made a good and righteous fight on behalf of herself and the other women Cuomo not only harassed... but then wasted our taxpayer dollars to legally harass again and again.

After resigning in disgrace, Cuomo attacked the women he harassed with vexatious, punitive legal filings meant to bankrupt and humiliate them, and threatened to sue them for defamation. He wanted them to shut up. At great personal risk, they didnβt.

"We are devastated and heartbroken at the loss of our parents, Melissa and Mark. They were the bright lights at the center of our lives, and we can't believe they are gone. Their love for us was boundless. We miss them so much.
"We want everyone to know that we are both safe and with loved ones. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received, and we appreciate your respect for our family's privacy as we grieve.
"Our family would like to thank law enforcement for their swift action that saved others and for the coordination across communities that led to the arrest of the man who murdered our parents. We especially would like to thank the officers who were first on the scene to our parents' home and their heroic attempts to rescue our mom and dad.
"Our parents touched so many lives, and they leave behind an incredible legacy of dedication to their community that will live on in us, their friends, their colleagues and co-workers, and every single person who knew and loved them.
"If you would like to honor the memory of Mark and Melissa, please consider the following:
β’ Plant a tree.
β’ Visit a local park and make use of their amenities, especially a bike trail.
β’ Pet a dog. A golden retriever is ideal, but any will do.
β’ Tell your loved ones a cheesy dad joke and laugh about it.
β’ Bake something β bread for Mark or a cake for Melissa, and share it with someone.
β’ Try a new hobby and enjoy learning something.
β’ Stand up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace.
"Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. Our parents lived their lives with immense dedication to their fellow humans. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love your neighbors. Treat each other with kindness and respect. The best way to honor our parents' memory is to do something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else."
Please read and share this statement from Sophie and Colin Hortman, children of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark.

"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions
Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.
Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!
Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels
