Before I came up with this, I *always* had to look up the spelling of "palette." #writing #spellingcounts #design

Today, a Thanksgiving-appropriate lesson, along with a complementary teachable moment provided by Nextdoor yesterday. (I'm realizing that the Nextdoor author capped their version of "pennies" unnecessarily, but let's tackle one topic at a time.) #Thanksgiving

Today, I'm sharing a screenshot from Nextdoor. Please believe me when I say that I'm not judging the writer as stupid or flawed; I'm just using their real-life example for illustrative purposes. I am also posting two relevant lessons.

I'm so excited to read this (obviously used) book. I adore the Adrian Mole series and thought I'd read all the books in it, but I haven't.

Looking at the title reminded me that I'm still insecure about the whole prostrate/prostate thing. I'm re-sharing the lesson for my benefit as much as anyone's.

I depend on this mnemonic myself.

You'll find this lesson in the book (Unflubbify Your Writing: Bite-Sized Lessons to Improve Your Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar), available on Amazon and at Unflubbify dot com.

Here's some solid advice: When writing an email, fill in the recipient's email address last and add any attachments first.

Do you have any advice for me?

Shorter is not always better, but unnecessary words waste your reader's time. My motto regarding word choice is: If it doesn't help, it hurts.

You may have grown up with the mnemonic "the principal is your pal," but that doesn't really tell you the whole story.

In his Modern English Usage, Bryan Garner says that saying "jive with" instead of "jibe with" is at Stage 2 out of 5 on his Language-Change Index. I've shared a screenshot of his amusing shorthand for this index.

In case you're writing or designing holiday cards, make sure you replace letters with an apostrophe and not an opening single quote. See the article I wrote for @creativepronetwork.bsky.social called "Naughty Apostrophes and How to Tame Them": creativepro.com/naughty-apos....
