Hard to overstate the seriousness. A professional, non-politicized, civilian-controlled military is one of those historically amazing things 2020s Americans take for granted.

The alternative is considerably worse.

A coalition that ranges from democratic socialists to neoconservatives, including a lot of energized liberals in between, is large and formidable.

A big pro-democracy tent. A united front. Any internal disagreements can be hashed out once the authoritarian emergency is over.

This really can work.

Of course the president can’t subvert the Constitution by lying that there’s an emergency. If lying that there’s an emergency is a magic loophole granting the executive branch the powers of Congress, there’s no point to Article I.

This is a big WTF. Teen Vogue had (surprisingly) some of the best politics reporting of the past several years.
