📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s been interesting seeing so many people say “this is why we don’t deploy in that region” - I don’t know if they’re lucky, or if they’re ignorant of the way this incident could affect people running outside the region…

As someone who’s never run compute in AWS for production, it’s surprising to an outsider that even this many years after other historic global failures there still seems to be internal dependencies on SPOFs in that region. Not to say other hyperscalers are any better, of course.

The number of people who didn’t know what us-east-1 was on Sunday and are suddenly experts in running multi-region distributed systems at scale today is truly remarkable.
