This was the second documented polar bear at Summit. There's a NatGeo article about the 2018 incident. EGRIP also had a bear in 2016, and mother/cub tracks nearby in 2024. In emailing with @aederocher.bsky.social about the bear's behavior, he said overland movements are actually pretty common

Happy #AntarcticaDay! Today marks 65 years of the Antarctic Treaty. Here are a few of my favorite photos from my time in the south.

Dr. Margaret Oakley Dayhoff

I took biochem in 2001, and for nearly 20 years read amino acid sequences daily… and I never knew Dayhoff named them or even the logic behind things like Q until last Friday (h/t Mike Janech). Also, this is another big Dayhoff moment for me. She was incredible!

I just received this cool piece of Greenlandic history. Rasmussen and Freuchen minted these coins in 1910 as a currency for their Thule Trading Station at Cape York #Arctic #Greenland

Had a wonderful time helping teach a 3-day Environmental Genomics and SeqCode workshop at Shandong University, followed by a weekend of hearing great talks at the Chinese Association of Microbial Ecology meeting in Qingdao, China.

Polar bear sightings far inland on the GrIS are rare. Thankfully (and amazingly) the bear showed little interest while passing through camp and carried on upwind over the horizon. Everyone is safe, wind direction has been consistent, and we're maintaining a 24-hour watch. 3/3

I discovered this just minutes after finishing when I made an unplanned stop at an elevated atmospheric monitoring station.

My head's always on a swivel here, but I have a new appreciation for how difficult it is to spot a bear even in clear conditions. 2/3

Field work in my final week at Summit Station, #Greenland ended with an unsettling surprise yesterday. Unbeknownst to me, a #polarbear was approaching from directly downwind while I was sampling snow south of station. 1/3
