Like anything there's peaks and valleys, but I think I'm improving overall.

It feels awful at first to not fight them, which offers only temporary relief, but in the long run it really helps. Last night I was hanging out with friends and experiencing the same thoughts that could make me spiral, but they weren't causing me that distress. They were just kinda there.

It goes against all instinct but it's genuinely what's best. Engaging w the thoughts just teaches your brain that they're a danger worth taking up space, and it just makes them come back stronger. What's needed is to label them and not touch them: "that's OCD. I'm not engaging."

Starting OCD treatment is wild cos part of it is learning that mentally arguing against OCD thoughts just makes them stronger, so your brain will be telling you the most distressing ideas and your goal is to just let them exist in the background and live your life anyway.

I hate hate HATE that every time you see genuinely good advice for dealing with OCD on TikTok, it's immediately followed by, "and that's why seeking any kind of professional help is Bad Actually™. BE AFRAID. BUY MY SEMINAR INSTEAD."

I really wish TikTok OCD influencers would stop saying, "Talk therapy makes OCD worse!" Like if the therapist doesn't know OCD is the problem, then maybe. But I'm in talk therapy w someone who knows I have OCD and it's been incredibly helpful. Stop fearmongering your viewers away from seeking help!
